How The Blog Works

HOW THE BLOG WORKS ~ FROM THE BOTTOM UP

THIS SECTION FIRST – THEN IT’S BOTTOMS UP.

What the ‘Blogosphere’ doesn’t tell you is what a ‘Blog’ is, and how the ‘Blog’ works. 'CONFUSED'

They assume that if you are on the internet you understand all this lingo … uh, ahem, uh … yeah, right, you say to yourself, but “I don’t understand it” and “I don’t how know it works”.

All we do know is that we hear this darned word ‘Blog’ everywhere … ‘Blog’ … ‘Blog It’ … ‘Blogger’ … ‘Blogoshere … and on and on. It’s a noun and a verb and they are all doing something, but the heck are they doing???

Subconsciously you want to understand because it’s like some club that you haven’t been invited to … you think, maybe I want to ‘blog’ too?

Well, you are invited, let’s help you get your blog on, meet you in the middle.

NOW, IT’S BOTTOMS UP … YES, GO AHEAD, SCROLL DOWN TO THE VERY BOTTOM SECTION … I. WHAT IS A BLOG? … AND THEN READ SECTION BY SECTION TO THE TOP … THERE’S A REASON.

BASIC BLOG POST BEHAVIORS

IV.  Why Did We Read From The Bottom Up?

One last thing you should understand about blogs is that the chronology, or the date order of the posts can go either way … newest first or oldest first.

The posts may be arranged in chronological, dated order, from top to bottom, with the first post, the oldest post, on top. BOTTOMS UP!

Or the exact opposite may be the case, as in the newest, most recent post sits at the top of the page, and if you want to get to the very beginning of a string, or conversation, you must go the bottom of the page.

Either way, all the input is there, it’s either newest to oldest or it’s oldest to newest, this is a personal preference on the part of the web’s author.

The reason we read from the bottom up was to demonstrate the possible reverse order that a blog may be arranged with, so that as you surf the web, that little tip may help you along life’s path. Cheers! Bottoms Up! Do you hear Nickelback in the background?

III.  Blogging With A Purpose

Purpose-filled blogging focuses on the overall subject matter that your website focuses on. Generally, you educate, share information, and invite discussion.

Your blog becomes a hub of ideas and information, tool, tips, tricks, you name it, for people who are interested in the very same topics as you. It becomes a meeting of the minds and a virtual meeting place.

II.  And Now We Shall Blog

Ideally your ‘Blog’ relates to the subject matter of your website … but, if your website doesn’t have a central focus then it’s common to see a blog that is just a recordation of random musings, it’s all up to you, and it’s relative your purpose for blogging in the first place.

Some people blog their ‘journal’ as it were, they blog their diary, their intangible, non-existant book of blank pages.

They have transferred the virtual diary or journal into a webpage, something akin to a biography of sorts, and with enough content and chronology this could be seen as an outline, which could become a book, or a novel.

Blogging is writing. In its purest form, it is expressionism.

Whatever you decide, it’s all good. Decision good. Action better.

I.  What Is A Blog?

First let’s nail the origin of the word itself … this word ‘blog’ comes from the slightly longer word ‘weblog’ … that is to say web − log, if we show the word broken into its two syllables.

What’s a web log? Well, from the context of the word, it’s a log, or a type of listing that includes entries, generally organized according to their date, and/or their subject matter.

Ah, beginning to see, that it is something akin to a journal, a newspaper, a ‘rag’, a paper, an essay, a written work, and possibly a book?

The piece, the post, the entry, it can be factual or fictional and opinionated or not. The point is, you are the author, the writer, the reporter, the essayist, so it’s your choice.

Back to the word and term, ‘weblog’ which got broken in half, or shortened, to web – log, then the word got shortened or truncated, to then create the concept of the word, ‘log’.

With the exception that, it kept and borrowed the ‘b’ from the original word ‘weblog’ and we were all as a society off and running with our new colloquialized word and concept, known as the ‘Blog’.

The Wikipedia post explains the evolution in a variant fashion, however we see the evolution from the outside looking in, and with an eye to the etymological roots of words and their meanings, i.e. nouns and verbs and parts of speech, in a word English, the language, replete with all its wacky ideosyncracies and rules.

For more history on the exact origins … here is a piece from, Wikipedia …. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blog

“The term “weblog” was coined by Jorn Barger[9] on 17 December 1997. The short form, “blog”, was coined by Peter Merholz, who jokingly broke the word weblog into the phrase we blog in the sidebar of his blog Peterme.com in April or May 1999.[10][11][12] Shortly thereafter, Evan Williams at Pyra Labs used “blog” as both a noun and verb (“to blog”, meaning “to edit one’s weblog or to post to one’s weblog”) and devised the term “blogger” in connection with Pyra Labs’ Blogger product, leading to the popularization of the terms.”[13]
